Zora Janžekovič (September 30, 1918 – March 17, 2015) was a Slovenian plastic surgeon and pioneer in burn treatment. Born in Slovenska Bistrica, Slovenia, she attended the School of Medicine at the University of Zagreb, graduating in 1947. During her career she developed a revolutionary method for treating deep dermal burns: tangential excision to healthy tissue followed by immediate skin grafting. This innovative approach significantly reduced infection rates and hospitalisation times, revolutionising burn care worldwide. Set against the backdrop of German occupation in World War II and later communist rule in Yugoslavia, Dr Janžekovič persevered through personal and professional challenges to achieve surgical breakthroughs in burn care in ill-equipped facilities with limited resources and support. Dr Janžekovič gained international recognition for her work, hosting numerous renowned surgeons at her burn unit in Maribor, Slovenia, and her methods became the global standard for treating deep dermal burns. A remarkable surgeon, who put patient care at the forefront of her work, her legacy lives on with the “Zora Janžekovič Prize”, recognising individuals who have significantly advanced burn care under challenging conditions.
