Presentation Description

Institution: Flinders Medical Centre - SA, Australia

Purpose Podcasts, a digital audio format widely used for entertainment, information and education, offering a flexible and accessible learning tool. Podcasts specific to plastic surgery have increased in number and scope, offering a range of options for on demand, self-directed learning tailored specifically to the field of plastic surgery. Methodology A systematic search was performed using key search terms to identify plastic surgery education podcasts available on free podcast streaming services. A qualitative content review was conducted, analysing key advantages and limitations relating to educational content, format, accessibility, and ease of access. Results Podcasts included including The Loupe, Resident Review, The Plastic Surgery Podcast, were found to provide several benefits, including affordability, accessibility, and on-demand learning opportunities, particularly for those with limited time for study or trainees in remote areas. Benefited included delivering case discussions, expert interviews, and updates on surgical innovations. Challenges included sporadic use of visual companion resources, limited references, and omission of important information were also noted. Conclusion Plastic surgery podcasts are a valuable supplement to traditional educational methods, offering a cost and time effective flexible option for continuous medical education and professional development. Limitations including quality of content, and availability of associated visual and hands on learning aids highlight the need for complementary learning methods. Further studies are required to assess the effectiveness of plastic surgery podcasts in optimising specific educational outcomes and long-term impact on surgical education and practice.
