Presentation Description

Institution: The Alfred - Victoria, Australia

Purpose: The introduction of advanced weight loss drugs, such as GLP-1 receptor agonists, has revolutionised the management of obesity and weight reduction. We explore how the widespread adoption of these medications is transforming the field of plastic and cosmetic surgery. In particular, the implications for body contouring procedures, fat transfer techniques, and patient care protocols in the context of rapid pharmacological weight loss. Methodology: A comprehensive review of emerging trends in surgical demand and practice patterns associated with pharmacological weight loss was conducted. Clinical case studies and literature were analysed to assess the impact of these drugs on body composition, skin redundancy, and tissue quality. Results: Weight loss drugs have led to an increased demand for body contouring procedures, such as abdominoplasty, brachioplasty, and thigh lifts, as patients address excess skin and tissue laxity following significant weight reduction. Fat transfer procedures are being impacted by reduced fat availability and altered fat quality. Moreover, rapid weight loss often results in unique skin and tissue characteristics. Conclusion: Weight loss drugs are reshaping the landscape of plastic and cosmetic surgery, driving the need for tailored surgical strategies and multidisciplinary approaches to care. Surgeons must anticipate an evolving patient demographic characterised by rapid, pharmacologically induced weight loss.
