The social media revolution and emphasis on body image continues to drive the breast implant industry, which is valued at approximately 2.5 billion USD globally. This poster aims to provide an overview of the various breast implants available for use. Breast implants are often synonymous with the general impression of Plastic Surgery, with breast augmentation being the second most performed cosmetic procedure globally in 2023. Prior to the invention of modern breast implants, women have trialled various methods to create the illusion of more voluptuous breasts. Egyptian and Victorian women used tight clothing and corsets to lift and shape their breasts. The 19th and early 20th century trend of breast enhancement by injecting assorted substances directly into the breast was quickly abandoned due to its significant complications and adverse effects. The first breast implant was a silicone-based product invented and used by Plastic Surgeons Thomas Cronin and Frank Gerow in the 1960s. This was followed shortly by a saline-based implant. This milestone revolutionalised the field of breast augmentation and reconstruction. There continues to be much research and development into modifying the shell, filling, shape, and texture of breast implants to provide women with safer and effective options for fulfilling their desired appearance.
