Presentation Description

Purpose: To review the historical development of skin grafting and its role in reconstructive plastic surgery. Abstract: Skin grafting is a cornerstone of reconstructive plastic surgery, enabling coverage of soft tissue defects following trauma, burns, and oncological resection. Skin grafting is an ancient practice that has developed overtime. Reverdin and his development of pinch grafts presented a successful reproducible method of skin replantation. Subsequent advances in split-thickness and full-thickness skin grafting improved graft survival and functional outcomes, particularly in burn reconstruction. The refinement of surgical technique, wound bed preparation, and postoperative care expanded reconstructive applications. More recently, the integration of dermal substitutes has further enhanced grafting strategies. Understanding the historical evolution of skin grafting provides insight into fundamental reconstructive principles that continue to underpin modern plastic surgery practice.
