Institution: Sunshine Coast University Hospital - QLD, Australia

Bernhard Von Langenbeck (1810-1887) was undoubtedly the best surgeon and inventor of his time, with numerous surgical tools and procedures bearing his name. He obtained his doctorate in 1835, with a thesis on “The Inner Structure of the Retina”, at the University of Gottingen, before embarking on a two year fellowship.1,2 Upon returning to Germany, one of his earliest contributions was to describe a “yeast like budding fungus” in thrush, which was later named Candida Albicans.1 It was when one of the Holstein wars broke out, that he embarked on his career as an army surgeon, which is where he urged for sanitation and retrieval services for the wounded.1 His work can be seen today in orthopedics, describing the posterior approach for proximal femur and acetabular fractures, along with being one of the earliest advocates for immobilising dressings for immediate fixation for fractures.1,2 In addition his “uranoplastik” procedure, being the closure of the palate with a mucoperiosteal flap, earned him the title “the father of modern day palatoplasty”.1,2 His most well known contribution comes in the form of surgical instruments, with the Kocher-Langenbeck still in use today.1 References: 1.Cesmebasi A, Oelhafen K, Shayota BJ, Klaassen Z, Tubbs RS, Loukas M.
