Institution: Eastern Health - Victoria, Australia
The Standard of Care for the Health of Transgender and Gender Diverse People (SOC) 8th edition was published in 2022 to ensure that individuals receive ethical, respectful and high-quality gender-affirming care, including gender-affirming surgery. However, there are still barriers for transgender individuals in accessing gender-affirming surgery in Australia, such as limited access to knowledgeable providers and financial constraints.
Purpose: To provide an educational overview of gender-affirming surgery options and examine the policy surrounding Medicare support in Australia, identifying gaps and offering solutions.
Results: Gender-affirming surgery options vary between male-to-female (MTF) and female-to-male (FTM). Gender-affirming surgery for MTF individuals includes facial feminisation surgery, breast augmentation, and genital surgery. Gender-affirming surgery for FTM individuals includes facial masculinisation surgery, subcutaneous mastectomy and genital surgery.[1]
The Australian Roundtable on Gender Affirming Surgery 2023 emphasized the persistent barriers to surgery for transgender individuals, despite meeting the diagnostic criteria outlined in the SOC 8th edition. Gender-affirming surgeries remain underfunded/under-recognized by Medicare in Australia.
Conclusion: The public and healthcare professionals should be better informed about transgender health. Curricula related to this topic should be introduced in medical schools and surgical training programs. Additionally, more research and round table discussions with policymakers will be beneficial to advocate for the needs of the transgender population.
