Benjamin Keith Rank, fondly known as “Benny,” was born and completed his residency in Melbourne, Australia. He trained under renowned plastic surgeons, including Sir Harold Gillies, and was appointed assistant plastic surgeon at Hill End Hospital. During World War II, he joined the Royal Australian Army Medical Corps in 1940 and was commissioned to lead the Maxillofacial Plastic Surgery Unit at the 2nd Australian General Hospital in Egypt, gaining extensive expertise in trauma and reconstructive surgery while adopting innovative techniques.[1,2]
In 1942, Rank established the Repatriation Hospital Heidelberg to care for war-injured patients. He later played a key role in developing industrial safety regulations and campaigned for no-fault motor accident insurance. A pioneer of hand surgery, Rank established the first formal plastic surgery training program at the Royal Melbourne Hospital in 1946. His trainees made major contributions to keystone flap surgery, Dupuytren’s disease, and microsurgery.[1,2]
Through the Colombo Plan, Rank contributed internationally by supporting reconstructive surgery including India. He also founded Interplast, providing training and expertise across Asia and the Pacific.[1,2]
Rank made significant contributions to the literature, including studies on Marjolin’s ulcer, radiation carcinoma, and malignant melanoma, and authored Surgery of Repair as Applied to Hand Injuries and autobiography.[2] His leadership roles such as President of the British Association of Plastic Surgeons, and President of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.[2]
