Presentation Description
Institution: Campbelltown hospital - NSW, Australia
Purpose
Same day discharge of laparoscopic appendicectomy (SDDLA) has been shown to have no increase in adverse outcomes in appropriately selected patients. This study aimed to qualitatively assess the outcomes and patient satisfaction associated with SDDLA.
Methodology
A prospective quality control study was conducted at Campbelltown Hospital, adhering to strict inclusion and exclusion criteria for SDDLA. Data was collected from 40 patients undergoing SDDLA and satisfaction was evaluated via phone interviews. Data on postoperative pain, analgesia requirements, wound healing and patient satisfaction was scored out of 10.
Results
Prospective data collection revealed that 65% (26/40) of patients responded to postoperative phone independent call surveys. Patients showed high satisfaction scores regarding their wound care (80%) and communication from health staff (75%). Importantly, none of the patients required readmission to the hospital, and 75% of respondents indicated a preference for same-day discharge over extended hospital stays. The reasons for patients who would have preferred to stay included pain at home (4 patients) and preference to recover in hospital (2 patients). The majority of patients expressed overall satisfaction with the experience and were pleased with the surgical outcomes, with an average overall satisfaction score was 83%.
Conclusions
Careful patient selection is vital for ensuring the safety and success of same-day laparoscopic appendicectomy. This study highlights the feasibility of this approach and its association with positive patient experience.
