Dorsal wrist ganglion cysts are the most common benign soft tissue masses of the upper limb. There exist several treatment options, these include less invasive sclerotherapy or surgical excision. Managing dorsal wrist ganglions can be challenging due to the high risk of recurrence. This literature review aims to review the rates of recurrence for each of these treatment modalities and assess the efficacy to provide clinical guidance. The recurrence rates are highly variable in the literature, showing recurrence rates between 8.4 – 60.9% with percutaneous intervention, and between 6 - 41% with surgical excision, with higher recurrence associated with arthroscopic excision. As such, patients should be carefully counselled on their management options, and consider whether any intervention is necessary given the high rates of recurrence with either treatment modality.
