Presentation Description

Institution: University of Sydney - NSW, Australia

Background: Rural patients face unique barriers in accessing care for chronic conditions such as head and neck cancer (HNC). Assessing patient perspectives in a validated manner is an emerging process in clinical practice and can help improve delivery of oncological healthcare. Methodology: Through a systematic database search, sources were compiled to understand the evidence surrounding rural patient’s perspectives of head and neck cancer as well as the methods used to assess patient perspectives in this cohort. Results: 25 articles were included in the final review. These studies utilise a range of validated patient reported measures (PRMs) as well as qualitative findings from interviews and surveys. Studies measured patient’s perspectives at different stages of the cancer journey including pre-diagnostic patient factors, appointment and telehealth experiences, post treatment perspectives, examination of the perspectives of specific cohorts of head and neck cancer patient, and the development and implementation of patient reported outcomes measures. Conclusion: Patient perspectives are measured in a diverse fashion. A wide range of treatment modalities should be used to deliver healthcare to rural HNC patients. The use of patient reported measures in routine healthcare should be well justified and continue to be investigated.
