Institution: Royal Perth Hospital - WA, Australia
Introduction:
Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (PRS) in Perth has grown from the vision of Dr Leslie Le Souef, to a now expansive specialty providing specialty care to WA’s three million population.
History:
Dr Le Souef was inspired by his experiences in WW II to create a similar unit to serve WA. In 1948 he established the Traumatic & Plastic Surgery Unit in Royal Perth Hospital (RPH), being granted the use of only four beds. He persevered and recruited WA’s first trained Plastic Surgeon, Dr Harold McComb, who brought his expertise to not only RPH, but also the state’s children hospital, as well as Fremantle Hospital and the military Repatriation General Hospital. Dr McComb became the only on-call Plastic surgeon for every hospital in Perth. After several years of consistent work and availability, the demand for Plastic Surgery only grew. In 1961, WA received its second trained Plastic surgeon, Dr John Bremner, who had worked for the father of PRS in Australia, Sir B. Rank, as well as being the private assistant of the famous Dr Harold Gillies in the UK. Unfortunately, Dr Bremner passed at the age of 42, but not before progressing the treatment of head and neck cancers in WA. In 1963, their first registrar, Dr Cohney, returned from his overseas training to take up a position as consultant Plastic surgeon. Due to limitations on access to beds in RPH, he looked to other hospitals and ultimately created the PRS unit in Sir Charles Gardiner Hospital. This was now the fifth PRS unit to be established in Perth, creating the foundations for the specialty today.(1)
Conclusion:
PRS in Perth today is the culmination of its four founding consultants vision, creating a specialty encompassing five separate units within the span of twenty tears.
