BACKGROUND The use of artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots, such as ChatGPT have amplified. ChatGPT generates sophisticated responses across a wide range of topics, when prompted with a question. Its role as a teaching tool in medical education is emerging. We tested and evaluated ChatGPT in describing flexor tendon repairs that could be used as an educational tool for junior doctors. METHODS A serious of questions were input into ChatGPT to obtain flexor tendon repair techniques. Questions input into ChatGPT aimed to generate a procedure steps, flexor tendon repair techniques, and postoperative management. Responses from ChatGPT were then verified against published literature. RESULTS ChatGPT described basic flexor tendon repair procedure steps, repair techniques, and postoperative management. Compared to the literature, ChatGPT’s described flexor tendon repair techniques in basic detail and did not describe nor consider tendon of repair, zone of repair, nor suture material. ChatGPT was able to describe basic procedural steps, and postoperative management including post-repair rehabilitation protocols. Subsequent targeted questions into ChatGPT produced more detailed responses describing options for suture mature, repair techniques, and postoperative rehabilitation protocols. CONCLUSION ChatGPT is a powerful AI writer able describe a basic flexor tendon repair, with appropriate input data. ChatGPT can be used to augment education and training of medical students and junior doctors when prompted with plastic surgery-theme input, where its applications are wide. However, its output should not be used in place of appropriate clinical judgement.
