Presentation Description

Institution: Chinese University of Hong Kong - Shatin, Hong Kong

Elderly patients who suffer burns injury are different from patients who are younger. The modified Baux score, which estimates the mortality rate from burns injury, suggest that mortality rate of burns is strongly related to age. Similar to Australia, the population in Hong Kong is aging. The Prince of Wales Hospital is the home to one of 2 major burns centre. We have recently digitalised the burns database which dates back 10 years. The data has shown that there has been 5 times increase of burns in the elderly in the last 20 years. This is much larger percentage than the doubling of the elderly patients from 11% to 23% in the same period of time according to the census data. Our database has shown that most of the burns occur at home. Almost all of the mortality from the period of the database are from elderly patients and. Their pattern and mechanism of burns have also been identified and we are currently seeking ways to improve public education based on this data. The social situation in Hong Kong is quite different to Australia and this will be highlighted. Our hospital also employs a multitude of old and new techniques that our hospital to help improve the outcome. We hope to share our ideas, techniques and results in the presentation.
