Presentation Description

Institution: Wellington Regional Hospital - Wellington, Aotearoa New Zealand

The commonest abdominal surgical emergency, worldwide, is acute appendicitis [1]. In such cases, a rarer pathological finding is Appendiceal Diverticula (AD). This is a case study, and literature review, of a previously fit and well 17 year old female with acute appendicitis and a histological finding of AD and Appendiceal Diverticulitis. AD is a known, albeit rare entity, which reportedly occurs in approximately 2% of appendicectomy specimens. AD has been associated with higher rates of both complicated appendicitis and appendiceal neoplasms. Appendiceal pseudodiverticulum, in particular, have a higher rate of perforated appendicitis [2]. AD has limited associated literature, thus is likely under-recognised and under reported, given that AD is commonly an incidental pathological finding. It’s important to be aware of AD, due to the current association between AD with perforated appendicitis and appendiceal neoplasms. Given the paucity of literature on AD, it is vital to perform further research into this under reported entity. References: 1. Moris, D., Paulson, E. K., & Pappas, T. N. (2021).
