Professional Bio
Winan J. van Houdt is a surgical oncologist in the Netherlands Cancer Institute/Antoni van Leeuwenhoek hospital in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. His current practice focuses on Melanoma and non-Melanoma skin cancer as well as Soft Tissue Sarcoma at all anatomical locations, GISTs and Desmoid Tumors. Currently, he is the chair of the sarcoma unit in the NKI, and program coordinator of the Rare Cancer Program in his institution. His research focus is on neo-adjuvant trials, translational research and quality of life. He was program chair of the CTOS annual meeting in 2021, and is currently the chair of the EORTC soft tissue and bone sarcoma group (STBSG). He is co-PI of the STRASS2 and STREXIT2 study.
He obtained a MD degree at Utrecht University, as well as a MS degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences and a PhD degree with his thesis titled ‘targeting solid tumors’. He did his surgical residency at the University Medical Center Utrecht, the Netherlands, and did his Surgical Oncology Fellowship in The Netherlands Cancer Institute, and partly in Mount Sinai in Toronto, Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori in Milan, Italy, and a research fellowship in Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. He then worked in the Royal Marsden Hospital in London, UK, in the sarcoma/melanoma unit as a locum consultant before he moved to his current position in NKI Amsterdam in 2017.
Dr. van Houdt is Chair of the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) sarcoma group, and a member of the Transatlantic Australasian Retroperitoneal Sarcoma Working Group (TARPSWG). He is the co-author of over 200 peer-reviewed articles.
