Professor Nehmat Houssami
Professional Bio
Professor Houssami is a clinician researcher and Public Health physician, and Professor of Public Health at the University of Sydney. She leads the Breast Cancer Clinical and Population Health Research group. She has worked in breast imaging and screening services for 30 years and is a clinician at the Royal Hospital for Women, Randwick. Her research includes population screening, screening women at increased cancer risk, evaluation of new technologies, and the impact of testing on clinical outcomes. She is a global leader in breast cancer screening trials and cohort studies and has led or co-led international and national collaborative studies of tomosynthesis screening, breast MRI staging, MRI screening, and artificial intelligence for early detection. She has published large-scale studies on imaging surveillance in women with a personal history of breast cancer. She has expertise in evidence synthesis and has contributed to the development of clinical practice guidelines and WHO’s breast screening monograph. She has been a member of the TGA’s Advisory Committee on Medical Devices (2020-25) and the Expert Advisory Group for BreastScreen Australia National Policy & Funding Review (2023-25). Nehmat has >370 peer-reviewed publications and has co-edited two books on breast cancer screening. She is the inaugural National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) Chair in Cancer Prevention, and a National Health & Medical Research Council Investigator (Leader) Fellow.
