Ian Currie is a Consultant Liver Transplant Surgeon at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, UK, and leads a tertiary service in Scotland which receives referrals of complex cancers involving the vena cava in adults and children.
Ian undertook medical studies at Edinburgh, having first read Physiology in Glasgow and completing a PhD in developmental biology at the MRC Reproductive Biology Unit. He was the gold medallist in medicine and in surgery in his graduating class.
He collaborates with Performance Psychology at Edinburgh University to understand human performance aspects of organ retrieval surgery. He also works with the National Laboratory for computing in Brazil and the Dept of Mathematics in Trentino, Italy, to understand blood flow in abdominal and thoraco-abdominal NRP using computational fluid dynamics. He has a recently-appointed PhD Fellow who is exploring the physiology of perfusion in deceased donors undergoing NRP.
Alongside colleagues, Ian developed the Normothermic Regional Perfusion (NRP) program in Edinburgh which began in 2012. He is a course director for the Edinburgh NRP Masterclass which attracts Delegates from all over the world.
Ian was appointed UK Lead for Organ Retrieval at NHS Blood and Transplant in 2019, providing leadership for all types of organ retrieval across the four UK nations. Since then, he has developed novel educational platforms both virtual and in person to support high quality retrieval surgery.
Ian was appointed Associate Medical Director for NHSBT in 2022 and has developed the governance, training and mentoring framework which has allowed the safe and quality-assured expansion of NRP in the UK. Despite the absence of substantive funding, there are now 7/10 abdominal teams providing NRP in the UK, up from 2/10 in 2020. Ian is committed to safe and reputationally secure NRP.
