Dr Gary Hewett is a Perth dental surgeon whose life changed after a medical mission to Cambodia in 1995. Moved by the overwhelming need, he founded Awareness Cambodia—an organisation dedicated to rebuilding the nation through its youth. For 30 years, Gary has focused on transforming lives through education, healthcare, and opportunity in rural Cambodia. His passion is not just aid, but building future leaders—young people equipped with skills, purpose, and vision to strengthen their communities for generations to come. Driven by his Christian faith and a commitment to putting others first, Gary now dedicates most of his time to this work—spending around six months each year in Cambodia, and practising dentistry in Australia just one day a week while he is home. His efforts have been recognised with the Pride of Australia Medal, the Medal of the Order of Australia, and as a Western Australian finalist for Australian of the Year. Gary also serves as a Senior Adviser to a national Cambodian medical initiative delivering free care to remote communities. His mission is simple: Invest in young people. Build capacity. Change a nation.
