Dr Chris McDonald

Professional Bio
Dr Christopher McDonald is a General and Colorectal Surgeon based in Adelaide, South Australia, with expertise in minimally invasive and robotic colorectal surgery. He completed his general surgical training in Adelaide, attaining Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2012, followed by advanced colorectal training at major tertiary centres including Lyell McEwin Hospital and The Queen Elizabeth Hospital. He also holds a Master’s degree in Minimally Invasive Surgery from the University of Adelaide and has undertaken formal training in robotic surgery. Prior to medicine, he served in the Royal Australian Air Force and trained in nursing, bringing a broad and multidisciplinary perspective to surgical care. Dr McDonald is currently the Head of the Acute Surgical Unit (ASU) at Lyell McEwin Hospital in Adelaide, a major tertiary teaching hospital, where he is actively involved in managing complex and high-acuity surgical patients. His clinical practice focuses on complex abdominal and colorectal pathology, with a particular interest in the hostile abdomen and difficult abdominal wall closure. He has extensive experience in operative strategy and decision-making in high-risk cases, including reconstruction and optimisation of outcomes.
