Dr Anna Ibele

Professional Bio
Dr. Anna Ibele is a Professor of Surgery at the University of Utah School of Medicine, where she has a busy clinical practice in primary and revisional bariatric and foregut surgery with an emphasis on minimally invasive and endoscopic techniques. As a surgeon scientist, Dr. Ibele has research interests in health services utilization following bariatric surgery and is particularly interested in the impact of obesity and bariatric surgery on cancer risk. She is the founder and director of the Utah Obesity Treatment Biorepository, which contains banked surgical and phlebotomy specimens from hundreds of patients who have undergone bariatric surgery. Dr. Ibele and her research team are currently utilizing this resource to study the relationship between obesity and colorectal cancer risk in collaboration with scientists and clinicians in the U.S. and U.K. In addition to her clinical and research efforts, Dr. Ibele is a passionate surgical educator. She served for 8 years as the Associate Program Director for Resident Research and Professional Development for her institution’s General Surgery Residency. She is also active in surgical education and innovation efforts nationally in the United States, and is particularly involved in the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, where she serves on multiple committees and co-chairs the SAGES Foregut Committee. Dr. Ibele has lived and trained in a variety of regions in the U.S. She received a Bachelor of Science from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, and a Doctorate of Medicine from the Wake Forest University Bowman Gray School of Medicine. Following this, she completed a surgical residency at the University of Wisconsin Madison and a fellowship in Complex Minimally Invasive Foregut and Bariatric Surgery at Indiana University School of Medicine. In addition to this clinical training, she is currently completing a Master’s Degree in Clinical Investigation at the University of Utah to supplement and enhance her work in surgical research.
