Dr Anjay Khandelwal is the Marci Matthews Endowed Chair for Excellence in Burn Care and serves as Chief of the Division of Burn Surgery and Adult Critical Care at Akron Children’s Hospital. He also directs the Adult and Pediatric Burn Institute, the Acute and Reconstructive Burn Fellowship, and the Reconstructive Laser Program. His academic appointments span Surgery, Pediatrics, and Bioethics at both Northeast Ohio Medical University and Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine—underscoring his commitment to interdisciplinary education, clinical care and program development. Board-certified in General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care and fellowship-trained in Burn Surgery and Reconstruction, Dr Khandelwal brings over 17 years of clinical, academic, and administrative leadership experience. Widely recognized as a transformative thinker and systems-level innovator, he has shaped the landscape of modern burn care through creative problem-solving, team-based leadership, and rigorous quality improvement. Internationally, Dr Khandelwal is a respected authority in burn surgery and critical care. He is a frequent invited speaker at scientific symposia and serves on numerous national and international committees, including the American Burn Association’s Verification Committee. He regularly advises medical device manufacturers and hospital systems as a clinical and operational consultant and is regarded as a leading U.S. expert in burn-related medicolegal cases. He has authored over 50 peer-reviewed publications and delivered more than 100 invited presentations worldwide. As a pioneer in the use of laser therapy for hypertrophic burn scars and in the integration of skin cell suspension autografting into burn care, his clinical interests include advanced burn resuscitation, complex wound healing, communication dynamics in healthcare teams, and global burn care development. Dr Khandelwal’s humanitarian contributions are equally impactful. He founded India’s first pediatric rehabilitative burn camp and continues to support and mentor programs in resource-limited settings across the globe. In his free time, he enjoys world travel, photography, sketching, the fine and performing arts, cultural studies, public speaking, and the occasional game of cricket.
