Professional Bio
Andreas Karakatsanis is the Chief of Breast Surgery at the Akademiska University Hospital in Uppsala, Sweden, and an Associate Professor (Reader) of Breast Surgery at Uppsala University. He graduated from the National University of Athens and pursued his core surgical training in the same institute, followed by a fellowship in Endocrine and Breast Surgery in Uppsala, Sweden and a training fellowship awarded by the European Society of Surgical Oncology (ESSO) at the Royal Marsden in London. Andreas holds a PhD on the role of microRNAs in hepatic malignancies from the National University of Athens, Greece and one on magnetic techniques in breast cancer surgery from Uppsala University in Sweden. He serves currently as Secretary for the Executive Board of the UEMS Breast Division (European Boards of Surgical Qualification), standard-setting the European accreditation examination in Breast Surgery and as Deputy Editor-In-Chief for the European Journal of Surgical Oncology (EJSO).
Apart from his clinical activities, Andreas is teaching and mentoring undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD students. His research interests include surgical innovation, critical data meta-analysis and intention-to-outcome studies in breast and axillary surgery. He has had extensive activity in the field of magnetic techniques in breast surgery, oncoplastic breast conservation, patient-reported outcome studies, as well as quality of life, on which he has given talks repeatedly in international meetings and congresses.
